If you are planning to move to Russia and teach English, don't leave home without this essential guide. It covers a wide range of topics, from pre-departure preparations right up to finding an apartment and succeeding in job interviews.

Update note, February 2009: Teacher visa update in the pipeline. As more teachers go through the process and relate their accounts to me first hand, I will be able to provide better information about the ins and outs of it all. With more schools offering teacher visas, this now seems to be the most practical (and above-board) solution.

Update note, December 2008: There is now 'substantial' anecdotal evidence to suggest that the visa regime has 'gone back to normal' and that multi-entry commercial visas are not really being subjected to the 90-180 day rule at all. Which pretty much means the guide is no longer out of date. However, there will be an update with more information about teacher visas, as more schools have now gone through the bureaucracy to obtain permission to invite teachers and this is probably the best type of visa to have.

Please note: The guide will be updated in autumn 2008 to cover the new visa regulations and provide relevant advice. Please be patient - there is no way to rush the process as we are waiting for enough reliable, first-hand accounts of the new system and various 'fixes' in order that we can provide authoritative guidance.

Everyone who has purchased a copy of the original TEFL guide will be provided with a copy of the updated guide free of charge. Don't wait though - the price of the updated guide will be 12 euros or more. Take advantage of the offer now!

In the meantime, please use the forums on www.visarus.co.uk for information regarding the new visa regime.

The guide covers:

  • Pre-departure preparations
  • Getting a visa to be updated!
  • Finding work and accommodation to be updated!
  • Classroom etiquette
  • Life in Russia
  • Teachers' accounts of living and working in Russia
